Step 1: Search retirement funds with the FSCA

The Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) runs a free search for retirement fund benefits. You enter details such as your name, surname, ID number, fund name or employer name. If there is a match, you get the contact details of the fund or its administrator.

A match is not a payout
You still have to contact the fund and follow its normal claim process to prove the benefit is yours.

If the search finds nothing, try again with a previous surname or an old ID number. Many records were saved with incomplete details, so small changes in what you type can matter. You can also call the FSCA toll-free line on 0800 20 3722.

Step 2: Ask insurers about lost policies

For a life policy or an investment that was never cashed in, ASISA says to contact the financial services company involved. Expect to prove that you are the policyholder, a beneficiary or an heir, so keep your ID and any death certificate or policy papers close.

ASISA also points to SmartAboutMoney, which explains how to claim unpaid policy benefits and lists its member insurers with links to their sites.

Step 3: Government Employees Pension Fund (GEPF)

The GEPF treats a benefit as unclaimed when it is not paid within 24 months of the last day of service. If you worked for government, or you are the beneficiary of someone who did, check its unclaimed benefits page and the list for your province.

Who Documents the GEPF lists
Member or spouse Banking details form Z894, personal details form Z864 and a certified ID copy not older than six months
Beneficiary The member’s death certificate, a certified ID copy, Z894 and, for minors, a guardian letter and the guardian’s ID

You can also call the GEPF toll-free call centre on 0800 117 669.

Step 4: Check UIF benefits

If you lost a job or took maternity leave, UIF benefits may be waiting for an application. We explain how to check your record in our UIF guide.

  • Keep a note of every call, email and reference number

Frequently Asked Questions

What are unclaimed benefits in South Africa?

They are amounts owed to you or your family, such as retirement fund benefits or policy payouts, that were never paid out.

Is the FSCA search free?

Yes. The FSCA states that its unclaimed benefits service is free, so you should not pay anyone to run it for you.

Does a match mean I will be paid?

No. A match only gives you the fund’s contact details. The fund decides after you prove your claim.
